Meet my 1982 280ZX. Affectionately
known as “SilverGirl”, her favourite pastime
is ripping up the twisties, chasing other Z’s, avoiding
speed traps, and peeling around sharp turns. Favourite food
is Lucas Oil Stabilizer (she’s developed a temporary
smoking habit due to engine stress) and favourite drink
is high-octane anything. She enjoys getting a good bath,
with pedicures usually involving liberal use of “Tire
Wet” and some aluminum cleaner. Pet peeves include
getting crapped on by birds, parking lots, and salty roads.
SilverGirl
rolled off the lines in the Land of the Rising Sun back in
October of 1981 and delivered to her first owner in January
of 1983. Spending most of her time in Langley, British Columbia
(roughly 45 minutes east of Vancouver), she was bought and
sold a couple of times before winding up in the care and attention
of her present (and hopefully final) owner in beautiful Victoria
– situated on the southern tip of Vancouver Island.
Realizing
she was now going to be properly looked after, SilverGirl
demanded – almost at once – some vital changes
she knew would make her look and feel so much better. In short
order, the shopping list was made and visits to various specialists
took place. Having developed a nasty blister in her left rear
tire, she limped (literally!) to a friendly tire shop and
ditched her 12-year old Michelin 175’s for some fabulous
new shoes – BF Goodrich Radial TA 225’s to be
exact. Then it was off to the brake shop for front and rear
brakes. Followed by visits to get a new exhaust pipe (the
old one was flapping into her rear end – ouch!), she
asked for and got a new clutch, air filter, fuel pump, new
hoses, shock absorbers, and various other sundries needed
to make her look and drive great.
With
nearly 23 years and 244,000 kilometres under her belt, she
is feeling her age – prone to hot flashes once in a
while, she keeps cool with a new water pump and lots of coolant
while staying fit with lots of endurance runs. Her arteries
are a bit plugged with carbon but with current high speed
drives and an engine rebuild in the near future, she will
continue to age gracefully in full keeping of the Z legend.
SilverGirl
loves her heritage and has made contact with many relatives
across the generations. She thinks the newest kid on the block
will turn out pretty well….just wishes their owners
would wave a little more.
